Karen Walker, Director, Property Management at Hullmark Developments
Like many in Property Management, Karen fell backwards into this industry. While working for a real estate developer in Mississauga she volunteered to manage a small retail plaza they had recently constructed. Karen took on the task with no prior experience, but somehow managed to figure it out as she went along. She enjoyed managing that property so much that she decided to pursue it as a career path, and for her next role she landed a Commercial Property Manager position with DMS Property Management. In 2016, Hullmark offered Karen the opportunity to help internalize the Property Management function for their commercial assets, which had previously been farmed out to 3rd party service providers. Since accepting the role, there have been many challenges with creating a new department from scratch, but fortunately those challenges have been far outweighed by the rewards. Karen says she has learned more about herself and about working with others in this role than she has over the course of her entire career, and she deeply appreciates the value of stepping outside her comfort zone. Karen is a firm believer that a successful team is only possible if each member feels supported and engaged, and appreciates the importance of cultivating an environment of inclusion, development and opportunity in order to achieve this. Externally, Karen is passionate about fostering positive relationships with tenants and promoting their success by creating comfortable and constructive spaces within efficient buildings. When faced with age-old issues she enjoys the challenge of breaking the cookie cutter mould and finding new solutions that appeal to today’s modern, innovative tenant. Outside of work, Karen is happiest when cooking, travelling, or seeing live music. Originally a native of the GTA’s west end, she is now a proud resident of Toronto’s Leslieville neighbourhood. Witnessing the evolution of Toronto’s various vibrant neighborhoods and learning about the City’s history are quickly becoming her favourite past times.
